We have another way of expressing if a person asks a person to clearly express something he’s speaking about. It equals to the word we’ve learned1 yesterday which is that “What are you getting at?” And for today what is it? Let’s listen to the mini situational following dialogue to get the answer.
A:You said you need more friends.What are you driving at?
B:It means we should try to be more social with people.
Have you got the answer? It is “What are you driving at?” It’s also a way of asking “Tell me directly instead of beating around the bush.”Her is a phrase: to drive at. It also means “to come to sb’s attention”. Two more examples, let's take a look at:
Example 1: Igot your text message saying, “I got you fired.” What are you driving at?
Example 2:I am not sure I know what you are driving at.
